  • Welcome to the Art Department

    At St. John the Baptist, Art begins in the students Sophomore year with Studio in Art.  This course is based on the elements and principles of design.  The course is a fundamental art class that combines porjects and techniques with Art History.  It is also one of the classes students can choose for their state required Art credit.

    STUDIO IN ART - Open to Sophomores    

    This class meets daily for one full year.  Students are introduced to a variety of art techniques and media.  Emphasis is given to the elements and principles of art as well as the history of art.  Through demonstration, observation and hands-on studio experience, students gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the Fine Arts.  This course fulfills the basic state requirement for Art.

    ART ELECTIVES

    PAINTING - Semester – Open to Juniors and Seniors
    The element of color is explored and assistance is given in the development of a personal art style.  Emphasis is placed on color theory while experiencing a variety of painting media which include watercolor, tempera, acrylic, water soluble oils and mixed media. A major project is assigned. Work outside of the classroom is mandatory.

    DRAWING EXPERIMENTS SJU  - Open to select Juniors and Seniors (3 SJU Credits)
    Various drawing techniques are explored. A variety of media will be encouraged to help develop personal style. Individual attention is given toward specific college portfolio needs. This course is based on the “contract system” where students are expected to work independently as well as in the classroom. Work outside the classroom is mandatory. This course may be taken for school credit if the student does not meet SJU requirements.

    DRAWING  - Open to Juniors and Seniors
    In this single period course, Students will learn skills and techniques for drawing accurately from direct observation. Emphasis is placed on understanding form through value, proportion, and perspective of various subjects and is geared toward portfolio preparation. A variety of media will be explored including pencil, pen, ink, charcoal, and pastel.

    PHOTOGRAPHY I (Film) t - Open to Juniors and Seniors                        
    In this studio Art class, students learn the basic darkroom procedures (developing and printing of black and white pictures), how to use and control light, as well as visual editing and cropping in order to strengthen their picture taking techniques.  Also, students learn correct presentation format and produce a final portfolio suitable for college entrance or personal use.  

    INTRO TO PHOTOGRAPHY SJU - (3 SJU Credits) - Open to Juniors and Seniors            
    This is a college level course introducing students to the tools, techniques and creative aspects of Black and White film photography. Students will be developing their own film and printing pictures in a darkroom.

    PHOTOGRAPHY II - Open to Juniors and Seniors                                
    In this advanced level course, students will continue to learn the creative exploration of film photography and the darkroom.  Emphasis will be placed on stretching the photographers’ creative ability and understanding of photographic techniques.  It will also focus on understanding the connections between film and digital photography.  Students will produce a portfolio as part of their final grade.

    CERAMICS  - Open to Juniors and Seniors                             
    This course is designed for students who are interested in working with clay.  It includes experimentation with the various methods of handling clay, understanding and utilizing the various glazes and glaze techniques.  This course introduces the student to ceramic sculpture.

    INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC ART -
    This course introduces the student to the basic programs used in computer generated art and design through the use of Adobe CS5 Suite. Emphasis is placed on original and creative use of technology in the visual arts as a design tool. Both fine art and commercial art projects will be produced using elements and principles of design.
