St. John the Baptist Diocesan High school

The Social Studies Department offers a wide variety of courses designed to fulfill New York State requirements while encouraging student growth, leadership, and citizenship.

During freshman year, students study Global History in Global I Regents or Global I Honors. In addition, students awarded the Distinguished Scholar Scholarship have the option to enroll in AP World History: Modern.

During sophomore year, students complete their world history studies by taking Global II Regents, Global II Honors, or AP European History. Sophomore year culminates with the Global History and Geography Regents Examination.

During junior year, students delve into United States History by taking U.S. History Regents, U.S. History Honors, or AP U.S. History.
Social Studies electives, which become available during junior year, include AP U.S. Government & Politics, AP Human Geography, AP Economics (Microeconomics & Macroeconomics), SJU Sociology, Introduction to Sociology, Criminal Law, Civil Law, Long Island History, American History Through Film, and Bloomberg Market Concepts.

The goal of the St. John the Baptist DHS Social Studies Department is to develop students who understand democracy, the workings of our government, appreciate diversity, and have a solid foundation of research and critical thinking skills while meeting the needs of all students.   Students should possess the necessary skills that would allow each to become productive citizens in, and contribute to our global society.
